During an organizational meeting on Monday, the Selma City Council chose Ward 4 City Councilwoman Angela Benjamin as president pro tempore.
In that role, Benjamin would lead council meetings in the absence of Council President Corey Bowie. Benjamin follows Cecil Williamson, who chose not to seek reelection in Ward 1. Benjamin, Bowie, Sam Randolph, Jannie Thomas and Michael Johnson voted for Benjamin. Susan Keith, Carl Bowline, Miah Tolbert-Jackson and Johnny Leashore voted for Keith, who is the second-longest serving council member.
Randolph, the longest serving member, was first nominated for the job by Johnson. However, Randolph declined the position.
“Due to circumstances, I feel like pro temp is not for me at this time,” Randolph said.
