The Dallas County Jail was placed on lockdown Tuesday morning after a group of inmates got into a fight.
Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson said two inmates were stabbed, but Sheriff Harris Huffman disputed that.
“There was a disturbance at the jail involving five to six inmates,” Huffman said. “Nobody at that jail was stabbed.”
Jackson said a reliable source, who he declined to identify, told him inmates Kenyada Dukes and Michael Morton were stabbed in the fight.
“They got stabbed,” Jackson said. “I stand by that.”
Huffman said only one inmate suffered an injury but it was minor.
“We had one individual that had a [piece of hair] pulled out of his head … which caused his head to bleed a little bit. That’s it,” Huffman said. “The nurse checked everybody out, and everybody was all right. Nobody went to the hospital.”
The jail was placed on lockdown until the situation was resolved and the inmates were calmed down.
Huffman said the fight happened around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, and it is still under investigation by the department.
“I’ve got some deputies out there right now,” Huffman said. “We’re doing an investigation. We’re taking statements from the inmates that were involved … and we’re taking statements from the guards.”
Huffman said deputies would interview people with Jackson’s office to see what they know about it and where their information came from.
Jackson said the stabbing was gang related.
“They’re having trouble keeping these gangs separated at the jail because there are so many of them locked up right now,” Jackson said. “So there is going to be more of this.”
Huffman said this is the first incident like this in several months.
“The problem is I’ve got 135 people in jail. I’ve got 22 out there for capital murder. I have seven out there for murder. The majority of them are gang members,” Huffman said. “So I have to try to separate right at 30 people from 135 to keep rival gangs from being incarcerated in the same place. I’m running out of room.”
