The seventh annual Mayor’s Charity Golf Classic went off without a hitch Wednesday at the Valley Grande Golf Course, where 22 teams of three played golf and raised money for the special needs children in Selma and Dallas County.
Every year, people take off work to play golf, see friends and, most importantly, raise money for these children that benefit so much from this program.
We are glad to see people year after year support this cause 100 percent.
Many times, special needs children are overlooked when it comes to the cost of their education, and events like this is what keeps them stocked with supplies throughout the year.
Another benefit of the tournament is the money raised to throw the kids an annual party. This year, the theme was Under the Sea. There were people dressed as mermaids, live fish on the tables, and plenty of decorations to make the kids feel like they were really in an aquatic location. It’s great to see that the people who dedicate so much time to this, really put forth the effort to make it a fun day for the students.
The golf classic does so much good for so many children, including benefiting Cahaba Mental Health, West Alabama Rehabilitation Easter-Seals, Selma City Schools, Dallas County Schools and Selma Disability Advocacy Center.
Because of his time in education and working with special needs programs, Evans considers the golf tournament fundraiser to be something worth continuing once his time as Mayor has come to an end.
We are so glad to see that Evans plans to continue the annual event. We can tell that his heart is in it and it’s always been for the children.
