For the second year in a row the town of Orrville is joining to the fight against breast cancer.
The town is holding its second annual run, walk and bike event Oct. 29 to help raise awareness and money.
“When you don’t raise awareness, it becomes the other person’s issue, so if somebody in my family has cancer it is my problem and everybody looks on,” said Brye McMillon, who is organizing the event with his wife, Marie.
“But when you raise awareness it becomes a community problem, and so the community comes together to try to fight it.”
And that is just what the McMillons are hoping to do, fight cancer by getting the community active and aware of how deadly the disease can be.
“My wife and I have both had family members that have either had cancer, succumbed to cancer or have it now, so it really is to bring awareness both from information and activities,” Brye said.
“One of the key ingredients to fighting cancer is really a healthy body, so really coming out to walk, run and bike allows them to engage in some physical activity that some may not have engaged in before.”
The event will feature walks and runs of one, two and three miles as well as a five and 10-mile bike course for participants.
Each race will start at the Orrville Community Center at 9 a.m.
Registration will be at 8 a.m. with an entry fee of any monetary donation.
T-shirts will be given to participants who register by Oct. 12 and make a donation of $25.
“This year is going to follow the same format as last year, except this year we hope to have individuals form some teams to help raise money as well as to generate more interest,” Brye said.
Last year the race generated more than $3,000 from more than 150 participants. The funds were donated to the American Cancer Society.
