BROOKWOOD — Brookwood had three different players run for over 100 yards as the Panthers overcame a first-half deficit to defeat Selma 37-26 in a Class 6A, Region 4 matchup.
Kaliq Snelson ran for 142 yards on 18 carries, and he scored on runs of 2, 10 and 13 yards.
“Our line did everything,” Snelson said. “I’ve got to give the glory to God, but next up is our line. Our line did everything. We got frustrated and tired of losing.”
Also for Brookwood, Brandon Johnson ran for 106 yards on 22 carries and scored on a 13-yard run and hit John Martin Wagner for a 24-yard touchdown and a two point conversion, and Austin Cook ran for 102 yards.
The Panthers were down 26-15 at the half after several turnovers, but they held the Saints scoreless in the second half.
“We always preach to them about never giving up, and they never do,” Brookwood coach Tracy Dunn said. “I felt like if we kept doing some of the right things, we’d have a chance to come back and do something right at the end. We hadn’t played that badly in the first half, but we gave up four big plays, and they have speed and did a good job.”
Selma was led by Jonathan Pressley, who scored on a six-yard run and an 81-yard kickoff return. Tyreshon Freeman added a 65-yard scoring run and a 3-yard touchdown pass to Gabriel Wade, but the Saints offense was stymied in the second half as they threw an interception and lost a pair of fumbles.
“We weren’t being disciplined, and we weren’t doing the things we needed to do,” said Selma coach Keon Handley.
“Turnovers have been a point of emphasis for us all year, and it keeps coming back to haunt us every week. Until we fix our turnover problem, we’re going to continue to put ourselves in bad situations, and that’s on us as coaches to keep emphasizing it every day to make us better.”
Brookwood (3-4, 1-3) will play at Hillcrest next week. Selma (1-6, 0-4) will host McAdory.
