Joseph Edward Whitacre, a beloved husband, father and Vietnam War Veteran, of Valley Grande, died in Alexander City, Sept. 16, 2016, after a lengthy illness with Parkinson disease.

He retired from U.S.A.F. July 31, 1976, after 23 years of service to his country.

He was a postal worker for 17 years until he retired in 1996. He graduated from Pottstown Pennsylvania High School in 1952.

In April of 1958, he married his wife of 58 years, Sybil Woolley in Selma. He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Selma.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph R. Whitacre and Geraldine L. Whitacre, of Pottstown.

He is survived by his wife, Sybil Whitacre; daughter, Pam (Larry) Holaday; son, Mike (Roxann) Whitacre; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Kopp officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing. Following the service, we will precess to Pineview Memory Gardens for interment. The family will receive friends at the church for visitation beginning at 10 a.m.
