Harriet (Hallie) Hampton Joyce died on May 20, 2016, in Portland, Oregon. Born on Father’s Day, June 18, 1950, she was the third of five children born to Rosa Miller Hobbs Joyce and John Howard Joyce.

Hallie graduated from Selma’s Parrish High School in 1968. She attended Converse College and graduated from Auburn University. Throughout her adult life, she was a fighter for the disadvantaged, particularly women. She was a generous soul with a biting wit and an iron determination. Hallie was a loving friend, tireless handy-woman, fearless leader, skilled restorer and voracious reader.

In 1976, Hallie married Jim Peickert of Chicago, IL. They were blessed to have one son, Alexander Charles Joyce-Peickert. Jim’s untimely death from Leukemia in 1986 was a devastating loss, leaving Hallie to raise their preschool aged son on her own. She was a devoted mother, and Alex was her greatest joy. He always made her very proud. Hallie was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s dementia five years ago. She battled her decline with the dignity and poise that was her nature, but the disease robbed her of her fire of mind and skill of hand.
