George P. Evans is seeking his third term as mayor of Selma. The municipal election is Aug. 23.
Evans said every day he brings progress, dedication and experience to the mayor’s office.
“Every day I wake up with three things on my mind. How can I best serve the citizens of Selma? How can I impact the lives of students who are in our educational system and how can I leave this city better than I found it?” Evans said.
Evans said his experience is deep and wide. He started in politics after running for city council. He served as council president for eight years and has been mayor since 2008.
“Managing complex issues from that vantage point has helped me to become a more effective leader. I enjoy working on and finding solutions for our various business challenges,” Evans said. “For me being in this mayor’s race is about creating new alliances, continuing to build partnerships and finishing some of the many great ongoing projects we started. Economically, I believe we are growing and continue to work through many of the challenges facing small cities across the country.”
Evans was born in Selma and fellowships at Reform Presbyterian Church since childhood. He and his wife, Jeannie have five grandchildren.
“My hope is that I can leave a legacy of good work that will be a positive impact for them and this vibrant community,” Evans said. “I believe I am the best candidate for mayor because my vision and plan will move Selma forward into the 21st century. My plan includes developing more affordable housing throughout city and ensuring that public safety, public works and code enforcement have the tools and equipment needed to enhancing the quality of life for the citizens of Selma. I truly believe in Selma!”
