Back to school

Preparing for the upcoming school year is probably one of the most dreaded times of year for parents.

Buying supplies and uniforms is expensive and can be a burden for families who already on a tight budget.

Fortunately, many organizations in the Selma-Dallas County area have developed events to help provide relief such as the Back to School Bash this coming Saturday at the Selma High School back courtyard, the Back to School Festival/COPS and Kids Day the following weekend at Bloch Park and the many other events that have already made a difference.

Nearly every weekend this month has provided an opportunity for students to get the supplies they need, and we thank all of the organizations who have put in the effort to make that possible.

Although these events may provide many valuable supplies, it may not cover all the bases.

Parents and guardians should mark the Back-to-School Tax Holiday on their calendars.

Beginning on Friday, Aug. 5 at 12:01 a.m., shoppers can purchase select items exempt from state, county and city taxes in participating areas.

Selma and Dallas County are participants in this year’s tax holiday.

This is a good time to stock up on necessary items  such as books, school supplies clothing and other items.
