Charles Allan “Pap” Long, Jr.

Charles Allan “Pap” Long Jr., age 88, a native of Bessemer, AL and a resident of Point Clear, passed away, Wednesday, June 1, 2016.

Mr. Long accomplished much in his life.  He was a man of few words and was respected by all who knew him.  Pap earned a degree in engineering from the University of Alabama, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order and the engineering honorary Tau Bela Pi.  His career spanned several decades at Sullivan, Long & Hagerty, Inc. and Long-Lewis, Inc., where he became chairman of the board and chief executive officer of both companies.  He was inducted into the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame in 1991.  Pap was a devoted volunteer, serving as President of the Bessemer Board of Education and Potentate of Zamora Shrine.  He was a member of the Rotary Club of Birmingham and the Eastern Shore Rotary Club.  A life-long Eagle Scout, Pap served on the Executive Committee of Birmingham Area Counsel of the Boy Scouts of America, and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award and the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award.  Pap was a member of the Eastern Shore Church of Christ, in Daphne.

Pap was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Porter Long; his parents, Lois Mason Long and Charles A. Long, Sr.; a brother, William Jacob Long; sister, Elizabeth Cobb; and stepson, Mike Smith.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sue Maumenee Long; son, William Jacob (Grace) Long; daughter, Patricia Long (Jim) Ford; step-daughter, Susan (Tommie) Burns; nine grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.

Graveside services and interment will be held in New Live Oak Cemetery, in Selma on Friday, June 3, 2016, at 11:30 a.m.  Active pallbearers will be William J. Long, Charles A. Long III, Dr. Dan Keel, Jerry Brown, Wren Burns, Tommy Burns, Tommy Stover and Burl Hill.  Honorary pallbearers will be Sid Chupek, Bill Jordan John Lanham, Scott Kelly, Tim Harmon, Garlin Farris, John Sibley, Bill Jones, George Ballard, Roland Gugot, Randy Word, Scott Reams, Bob Ledford and W. T. Aoodloe Ruthland.
