Area athletes to compete in state track meets

Keith, Ellwood Christian, Southside, Selma and Dallas County have a long list of athletes from their schools who will be competing in Alabama High School Association state track meets. The AHSAA state finals will be Thursday – Saturday. The 1A-3A finals will be Friday and Saturday at Cullman High School and the 4A-7A finals will be Thursday through Saturday in Gulf Shores.
Keith and Ellwood wrapped up their sectional finals at Paul Bryant High School in Tuscaloosa Saturday. From Keith, Quomila Johnigan placed first in the 200 meter dash with a 27.47. She had already qualified a day prior in the 400 meter dash.
“If you want to be the best, you use what you’ve got, take what you have and make the best of it,” said Keith head coach Clifton Reeves.
Keith’s Tyesiha Malone also qualified in two events, placing third in the 100 meter dash with a 13.43 and second in the 800 meters with a 2:54.03. Euneka Tower also qualified for Keith in the 800 meter run with a 2:59.06.
For the Keith boys, Jeremiah Campbell ran the 100 meter dash in 11:57 to place second. Travis Goldsby came in third in the 200 meter finals with a 24.33.
Eric Smiley ran the 800 meter dash in 2:16.34 to come in second. To round out a successful sectionals for the Bears, their 4×100 relay team qualified for state with a time of 46.06.
“It’s a big accomplishment. Anytime you can have that many athletes, whether it’s 1A or 7A, to have a large number of athletes compete and actually qualify, that’s pretty good,” Reeves said.
Ellwood’s Brianna Dower came in second place in the 100 meter hurdles with a 19.96 and placed fourth in the long jump, reaching 13 feet, five inches. Rashni Walker came in first in the long jump event, with a 14-foot-7 jump.
Jasmine Morgan placed sixth in the shot put, throwing it 26 feet, six inches.
Jonathan Pettway came in third place in the 1,600 meter run with a 5:52. In the 200 meter run, T’Markus Simmons placed third with a 24.61 and Macio Johnson placed fifth with a 24.62.
Southside’s Chris Davis qualified in two events at Smith’s Station High School in the class 4A sectionals, winning the high jump with a 5-foot-10 jump and the triple jump, reaching 44 feet, four inches.
Arzenda Pettway came in third place for Southside in the high jump with a 5-foot-6 leap. For the Southside girls, Antanya Dudley placed fifth in the javelin with a 65-foot-4 throw and second in the shot put with 27 feet.
Dallas County’s Caleb McDougal tossed the discus 116 feet, 10 inches for third place at Beauregard High School in the class 5A sectionals.
Tynesha Jones jumped 4 feet, six inches in the high jump for a fifth place finish and Kandyce Hardison threw the javelin 86 feet to place fifth.
Kareem Ross ran the 400 meter dash in 53.77 to place sixth overall.
At Paul Bryant High School in the 6A sectionals, Selma’s Johnathan Pressley ran the 200 meter dash in 22.17 for fifth place and Karl Robbins placed fifth with a 5-foot-10 high jump.
