She later returned to Alabama and worked at Fort McClellen in Anniston, where she met the love of her life, Earl. They were married on April 24, 1942. She and her daughters lived with her parents in Collins Chapel while her husband served overseas during WWII.  Upon his return, they moved to Selma where her husband was one of the founders of Selma Concrete Products and Bush Hog Manufacturing Company.

Jerry found great pleasure in serving and loving her family, church and community. She was an avid fisherman and sports fan. She traveled extensively throughout the world with her husband in his business, political, and civic activities and endeared herself to many with her sweet nature and outgoing personality. One of her greatest joys in life was to be the head cheerleader for all of her grandchildren in their various endeavors. During this period of her life, she became known as “Granny Goodwin” because of the love she showed to all of her grandchildren’s friends. She enjoyed watching all God’s creatures great and small from her bay window at her home with her beloved dog, Chipper.

She had an abiding affection for the blue birds and delighted in the arrival of the humming birds each season. The greatest compliment her daughters heard throughout her life was “How is your sweet mother?” In her last years, Jerry was lovingly cared for by her devoted sitters whom she considered family.
