The honors for 1A Player of the Year could stay within the same family.

Cousins and Keith seniors John Pettway and Harriet Winchester were named as finalists Thursday for the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s 1A Player of the Year awards. The winners will be announced at a banquet April 6 in Montgomery.

This is the second consecutive year Winchester has been a finalist for 1A Girls Player of the Year. She will be competing with Spring Garden’s Tykeah Rogers and Pleasant Home’s River Baldwin for the honor this year.

Winchester averaged 17.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game this season and is a Troy signee. She has scored more than 2,000 points in her career.

Pettway, Sacred Heart’s Diante Wood and Georgiana’s Jacquez Payton are finalists for the 1A Boys Player of the Year award. Pettway, a South Alabama commit, averaged 23.7 points per game, 6.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists this season for the Bears.

The ASWA also had previously announced its all-state teams, which included both players.
