Authorities say a 74-year-old Selma man shot his 41-year old son during a dispute over food at a Super Bowl party Sunday evening.

The Selma Police Department responded to a domestic violence call on the 2700 block of Etheridge Avenue around 10 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators believe John Caver, 74, shot his son John Caver through his arm, into his stomach. No one else was injured during the incident.

The son was airlifted to Baptist South in Montgomery. His condition is stable according to police. The father told police that he shot his son out of self-defense.

District Attorney Michael Jackson said the dispute began at a Super Bowl party the estranged wife of the father was hosting. He said the father came over to the party to get food.

“Him and his son got into an argument because the son said he paid for the food,” Jackson said.

Jackson said the father reached over the shoulder of his estranged wife and shot his son.

Lt. Sam Miller said a semi-automatic pistol was recovered and believes it was used in the shooting.

Police are unsure how many people were in the home at the time of the incident.

The father was charged with first-degree domestic violence with a $250,000 bond. His preliminary hearing will be March 8.
