Miles Hannah knocked down plenty of outside shots for the Black team on his way to a 28-point scoring output, but a more balanced attack from the Red team proved to be the winning formula.
Titus Lanier led the Red team to a 42-36 victory over the Black team during a third and fourth grade game in the YMCA basketball league at the YMCA of Selma-Dallas County Monday. The Red team led from the onset and held its composure throughout, responding each time the Black team tried to take the lead.
Red team head coach Jason Rogers said the ability of his team to get everyone involved was what made the difference in the game.
“I try to get them all in there because when you don’t get them in there, they don’t learn anything,” Rogers said.
Jason Rogers Jr. pulled down a rebound and scored on a putback layup to give the Red team a 6-2 lead.
Lanier followed with a two-point shot to give his team an 8-2 lead. Rogers Jr. hit a shot from the corner late in the first quarter to put the Red team ahead 17-6, but Hannah sank one of his many long-range two-point shots right before the quarter ended. The Black team came back in the second quarter to cut the lead to 19-16 at halftime.
The Red team came out of halftime refocused, and raced back out to a double-digit lead.
Lanier made a long two-point shot with under a minute left in the third quarter to take a 36-24 lead.
“We could’ve done better on defense,” said Black team head coach Herschell Brown. “It was some small errors, but we’ll probably work on it next time we get a chance.
Hannah responded right before the third quarter ended, hitting two more long-range shots to bring the Black team within eight points of the lead, trailing just 36-28.
The Red team held strong in the final quarter, staying unbeaten on the season with a six-point victory.
Rogers said he doesn’t think his team has trailed all season, but he admitted the Black team gave his team a tough challenge.
“Ain’t no ‘I’ in team. That’s my motto,” Rogers said.
