YOUTH SCORES: Seahawks win with defense; Packers light up scoreboard

For nearly three full quarters, it looked like neither the Raiders (0-3) nor Jr. Seahawks (3-0) would be able to score in regulation during Monday night’s youth football game at Memorial Stadium.

The Seahawks’ Javon Richardson apparently didn’t want to play overtime. Richardson took a handoff and weaved by Raiders defenders on a game-winning 61-yard touchdown in the third quarter to put his team up 6-0. It was the only score of the game in a defensive showdown.

“The defense, they played real solid tonight,” said Jr. Seahawks coach John Lumpkin. “The interior defensive line, Joseph Lumpkin and Lamarian Hatcher, they played real tough up the middle.”

Lumpkin was also proud of the performance of Justin Cochran at middle linebacker.

While both offenses were sputtering, the defenses were dominant. The Seahawks had two turnovers and the Raiders also turned the ball over twice, including once on an interception in the final minute on a potential game winning drive.

Ronnie Leshore was the Seahawk that came down with the game sealing interception.

Joshua Palmer received most of the carries for the Raiders on quarterback sneaks up the middle. Many of them were effective.

“I still think they came out and they fought real hard,” said Raiders coach Alvin Barnett. “Young team, they are still learning. We’ve got some kinks to work out, but we will be back for the next game.”

Packers 28, Bobcats 0

Jalen Prince had touchdown runs of 40 and 43-yards to lead the Packers (2-1) past the Pee Wee Bobcats (1-2) 28-0.

The Packers defense shut down the Bobcats’ offense, which couldn’t consistently move the ball the entire game. Meanwhile, the Packers had no issues on offense.

JoDarius Hamilton added an 87-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and Rodney Martin added a 2-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter

“Defense was the key. We got some stops, they capitalized, they scored and they did what they had to do,” said Packers head coach Calvin Pritchett.

It had been about two weeks since the Packers had played a game, but the rust didn’t show.  Prince’s 40-yard touchdown gave the Packers an early 8-0 lead going into the second quarter. However, it was Hamilton’s 87-yard run before the half that really put the game out of reach.

It was clear the Packers have plenty of players who can run the ball effectively.

“I run the main four [ball carriers] and they are pretty good,” Pritchett said. “They are going to keep it moving.”
