Coming off of a big-time win last week, Southside lost big against Satsuma on the road.
The Panthers (1-2, 0-1) lost 46-8 to Satsuma (1-1, 1-0) in the first game of Class 4A Region 1 play. Head coach Daniel Flowers said penalties
Flowers estimates Southside committed about 18 penalties in the game, some of which led to big plays being called back. Flowers said De’Quan Johnson, who scored five times last week, scored three times Friday, but had two of his touchdowns called back due to penalties.
Southside only committed one turnover in the game at Satsuma and had a chance to make the game close early.
“The game was a very competitive game the first half,” Flowers said. “We just missed some of the opportunities scoring in the first half and it came back to haunt us.”
The Panthers only trailed the Gators 18-8 at halftime, but were unable to mount a comeback in the second half. Flowers said the penalties Southside committed were 10- and 15-yard penalties that consistently set the Panthers back and stalled drives.
Last week in a 38-32 win, the Panthers committed just three penalties while their opponent committed more than 10 penalties. Flowers will hope to get back to that blueprint in Southside’s next game.
Southside will look to get back on track next Friday at Monroe County.
