Labor Day should be a real treat

It’s going to be a fun Labor Day in Selma.

The day will start with the Alabama River Raft Race at 9:30 a.m. that morning. The race will be run for the first time in decades and should be fun for all ages. Several unique and inspiring rafts have already been built and we cannot wait to see how the rest of them come together.

Gates open for the Riverfront Park Music & Arts Festival at 12 p.m. and live music will start at 2 p.m. with the Dead Fingers. The John Bull Band, Kenny Brown Band and Dirty Dozen Brass Band will also perform at the festival, which only costs $10 to attend.

The performances will take place at the Riverfront Amphitheater, which has been under construction since 2012. This concert should be the first of many incredible shows at the amphitheater.

The final event of the night will be the city’s fireworks, which are slated to start firing at 8:15 p.m.

The Blackbelt Benefit Group and the city of Selma have done a lot of work to make Labor Day a special holiday this year. We’re hoping big crowds will attend the morning’s river raft race and will stick around throughout the day to enjoy the music, activities and fireworks.
