The victim told investigators he was standing in the parking lot with some friends when he heard gunshots.

“According to the victim, he and some friends were standing in the parking lot across from a nightclub, and he advised that he heard a gun go off,” Ghant said.

According to Ghant, the victim didn’t realize he was shot until a few minutes later. The victim also told officers he didn’t know who fired the gun.

Ghant said the shooting is still under investigation and no arrest has been made as of Monday afternoon.

The victim was later transported to the emergency room at Vaughan Regional Medical Center to be treated for the gunshot wound. According to Ghant, the victim was later transported to a Birmingham hospital for further treatment.

According to Ghant, the Selma Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit, who is investigating the shooting, has not determined a motive. Ghant said investigators don’t have a suspect and the weapon that was used in the shooting has not been determined.

The SPD is also investigating a brutal assault and robbery that left a 34-year-old Selma man in the hospital.

According to Ghant, officers responded to 1800 block of Selma Avenue early Sunday morning around 1:12 a.m. to a reported assault victim.

When officers arrived on scene they found a 34-year-old man that was unconscious and had several lacerations on his head, according to Ghant.

The victim was transported to the emergency room and later transferred to a Birmingham hospital for further treatment.

According to Ghant, the victim and his 36-year-old friend were leaving a nightclub. The victim accidentally backed into grey Mercury Grand Marquis. When the victim and his friend got out to talk with people in the Grand Marquis, several black males exited the vehicle with shotguns.

One of the males held a shotgun to the victim’s head and told him not to move. The other males then began beating the 34-year-old, knocking him to the ground.

According to Ghant the men began stomping the victim’s head, face and abdomen.

“The suspects demanded all their property, which included $200 in cash, their wallets and a cell phone,” Ghant said.

The assault and robbery are being investigated by the SPD’s Major Crime Unit.

The Selma Police Department is asking anyone with information regarding either incident to call Crime Stoppers at 874-2588 or 1-866-442-7463.

Phone calls will be kept confidential and a cash reward could be available for information that leads to an arrest.
