Selma bowed out of the Dixie Majors State Baseball Tournament Friday after a 14-2 loss to Opp.

Selma, which hosted the tournament for the sixth consecutive season, was the first team eliminated. Selma didn’t consistently hit the ball throughout the tournament, but it was the team’s defense and pitching that let it down.

“This team has five playing junior college baseball, and we only have one that’s playing college ball,” said Selma baseball coach Scott Gunter. “Some of my kids haven’t picked up a baseball since last year in All-Stars. It’s tough ,but we’ve got to get better.”

Just like in Thursday’s 14-0 loss to Tuscaloosa, Selma found itself facing a gigantic deficit early.

A hard hit single up the middle by Lane Sirmon allowed Opp to take a 1-0 lead just minutes into the game. Selma starting pitcher Alex Davis was called for three balks in the first inning, which allowed Opp base runners to advance a base.

The first allowed Sirmon to get into scoring position where a deep double by Quinton Maddox could bring him home. After a passed ball allowed Opp to make it 3-0, a single by Grayson Campbell scored Dakota King to put Opp up 4-0. Opp then used a little trickery — a double steal — to get Campbell home and pushed its advantage to five runs.

“Last night we got down early, and it was like we just give up just about, and today we got down early in the first inning and couldn’t get over it,” Gunter said.

Selma scored its first run of the tournament in the bottom of the first inning on a single by Davis, which scored Keyshawn Ford, but the home team could draw no closer.

After Opp tacked on a sixth run in the second inning, Davis was replaced on the mound for Ford, who was ineffective in Thursday’s opener. He was more consistent Friday out of the gate, allowing only three runs in his first three innings he pitched.

“Our pitching wasn’t good enough,” Gunter said. “We just didn’t pitch the ball well. Keyshawn pitched pretty well when he came in, but we were already down so many runs.”

After slowly building its lead with one run each in the second, third and fourth innings, Opp shut the door on Selma in the fifth.

Walker Masser’s 2-RBI double extended the Opp lead to 12-1 and a single by Holt Hall brought in the final Opp run of the game.

Needing to get within 10 to extend the game, Selma managed to score its second run of the game. Jalen Furlow tripled to get into scoring position and Adam Seele’s double brought him home to pull Selma within 13-2.

Sirmon, who pitched the complete game for Opp, forced Davis to ground out and Wesley Gunter to ground out to end the contest.

“We had more hits tonight but we had a couple of errors that hurt us — routine fly balls you’ve got to catch,” Gunter said.

The tournament will continue Saturday and Sunday at Bloch Park. Games start at 4:30 p.m. Saturday and the championship series starts at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
