Group plans community worship day

Organizers of March’s Unity Walk hope an event this fall will bring the city together through a day of worship.
The Unity and Faith Community Committee, a faith-based group of ministers and community members, met Tuesday to discuss plans for its upcoming Family Day of Worship. The day will encourage people to renew or continue their faith, by staying in a house of worship.
“The Family Day of Worship is about getting Selma back with God. We believe the day of the week the least amount of people out doing anything is Sunday,” said First Baptist Church Pastor Dr. Jerry Light. “I’ve never seen a traffic jam on Sunday, and I’d love to see everyone in Selma coming to worship the church of their choice somewhere on that day.”
During the meeting, ways to make the community and church leaders aware of the event were tossed around.
Committee member and organizer Juanda Maxwell said the day of worship will be a great thing for Selma’s churches, that day and hopefully the future.
“It’s to each pastor’s advantage because you’ll be filling your church. We’re asking people to come back to the church of their desire. We want to fill up every church in Selma,” Maxwell said.
Light said he plans on promoting the day through newspapers and other means.
“We’re hoping the community will be inundated by different churches visiting. Some churches might have breakfast, refreshments or dinner afterwards. My church will have a meal afterwards. We’re excited about that,” Light said. “We want people to get back with God in their own way. I think that will make Selma a better place.”
The Family Day of Worship will be held on Sept. 13.
Letters will be sent to church captains on Aug. 3. Door-hangers will be placed Aug. 17. On Aug. 29 and Sept. 5, there will be citywide campaign days for the event.
