The Selma Police Department is investigating multiple shootings over Fourth of July weekend after a 28-year-old male and 16-year-old male were shot in unrelated incidents.
According to Sgt. Evelyn Ghant, the 16-year-old was shot Friday night around 6:58 p.m. on the 2700 block of North Broad Street while he was walking down the road.
“An unknown male approached him and just shot him in his left hand, and then he ran,” Ghant said. “The victim doesn’t know who the shooter was. All they know is that the shooter was a male. He couldn’t tell detectives anything further.”
Ghant said the victim was treated and released from the hospital, and the shooting is still under investigation. Ghant said the victim was not sure what kind of weapon the shooter used.
The second shooting happened around 2:47 a.m. July 4 on the 1800 block of Selma Avenue.
Ghant said officers were dispatched to the emergency room at Vaughan Regional Medical Center in reference to a 28-year-old shooting victim.
“At the particular time [the victim] did not know who shot him, and he stated that it was a single bullet,” Ghant said. “It entered his left leg, exited the other side and actually went into his right leg.”
Ghant said the 28-year-old victim had to undergo surgery to have the bullet removed from his right leg.
The victim was later released from the hospital and is in stable condition, according to Ghant.
According to the incident report, the 28-year-old was standing outside of a business on the 1800 block of Selma Avenue talking to some friends when the shooting happened.
“He was standing outside talking with some friends, and basically while he was out there, his friend was about to get into a vehicle and that is when an unknown driver came through,” Ghant said. “Apparently he got out and started shooting.”
No arrest has been made in the case, and detectives are still investigating it, according to Ghant.
“The detective is trying to get a second interview with [the victim], and hopefully he can identify the individual if he can give us a name,” Ghant said. “If he can give us a name, then the detective will put him in a photo lineup.”
Ghant said the police department is asking for help from the community and urges anyone that witnessed the shootings to come forward with details.
“More and more people are getting killed and more and more people are getting hurt. We have to really, really get the community to help us out when we have shootings like this,” Ghant said.
“We’ve got to get people to come out and let us know they were witnesses, so the detectives can put together a good case and take it to court and out [the shooters] in jail.”
Anyone with information concerning the shootings can call Crime Stoppers at 874-2588 or the Selma Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division at 874-2125.
