If children missed out on the first city of Selma ceramic art program, they now have another opportunity to indulge in their creative sides.
A second camp will begin July 6. Participants will complete and show off art projects like glazed mugs, pottery items, wire art sculptures and more. About eight projects are expected to be completed by the end of the course.
“If they attend the camp, we feel like they will be exposed to a number of different levels of art,” said camp director Candi Duncan. “We try to expose them to a lot of different things. Maybe that way, they’ll find something else they’ll like too.”
Area artists, former teachers and members from the community with backgrounds in art will be on hand to help assist the children.
Executive director of the Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce Sheryl Smedley plans on donating her time to aid children in organizing their works.
She said the camp is a great opportunity for children to work with artists.
“They get hands-on art instruction,” she said. “They even prepare their meals, so they get some life-learning skills, as well as art skills.”
Children who might have a tough time in school might enjoy the camp just as much as those who are pursuing an interest in the arts, Duncan said.
“Nobody feels bad about what they’re doing,” she said.
“They’ll leave with feeling good about themselves because they produced these pretty or interesting things.”
The camp will be held July 6-10 at the Old Dallas Academy Building.
From Monday to Thursday, the camp will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Friday, the camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon.
The cost to attend the camp is $125 per participant. Participants must be at least 8-years-old to attend the camp.
Those interested are asked to register before July 6.
