Orrville has a new attraction that will offer people fresh food at good prices.
The West Alabama Farmers Market officially opened June 20 at 14560 Highway 22. It’s the first farmers market for the town.
Judy McKinney, owner of the Dallas County Seed Company, said she wanted to give farmers a great way to add money to their pockets.
“This is really a great opportunity for people to make extra money on the side,” she said. “I’m excited for people. I want to see people thrive. We’re really excited to give this opportunity to these farmers.”
Since the market’s opening about six farmers have brought their goods like corn, peaches, sweet potatoes, fresh made lemonade, eggs and more.
McKinney said she’s had more vending commitments from other farmers, but their crops aren’t ready yet.
“By no exaggeration, we’ve probably already had about 800 or 900 cars come up and down the highway,” McKinney said. “Orrville is very busy. People don’t realize you have this influx of people coming from West Alabama.”
Although the market might be full of opportunities and prosperity for farmers, McKinney said there is a shortage of vendors and certain products.
“We definitely need more farmers because we have the market and the people to buy,” McKInney said.
The West Alabama Farmers Market opens Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 a.m. For more information or to set up a stand, call 996-9738 or 352-303-0774.
