Testing best way to lower HIV rates in county

An Auburn University Montgomery research group released a study in 2014 that showed a decline of HIV/AIDS diagnoses statewide but, unfortunately, an increase in Dallas County.
The Auburn Montgomery’s Center for Demographic Research reported 12.27 people per 100,000 in Alabama were diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 2012, which is lower than the 13.75 per 100,000 they reported in 2011.
Although the state overall is showing improvement, the 2013 data had Dallas County as the fourth highest incidence rated county, with 23.33 people per 100,000 diagnosed with new cases.
“The high rates seen in these counties indicate a need for increased HIV prevention efforts in focused rural areas,” the report stated.
The most effective way to prevent and even stop the spread of HIV is to be tested for the virus, especially if you meet certain risk criteria.
HIV can be transmitted through unprotected sex, blood-to-blood contact, needle sharing and breast feeding.
Selma AIR (Aids Information and Referral), the Selma Friends for Life and Walgreens’ Pharmacy are teaming up to offer HIV tests. No needles or pricks will be involved in the painless tests. Attendees’ gums will be swabbed and will know their results in 20 minutes.
All test takers must be 14 years or older.
The tests, administered by Selma AIR staff, will be held in a confidential area of the store.
Anyone who receives a positive test result can receive additional information about treatment and services in the area.
Testing will be held at Walgreens, located at the northeast corner of Highland Avenue and Broad Street. The final day for testing will be today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
