Dog days of summer still ahead

The temperature has been in the 90s all week and has even threatened to hit triple digits. Although it never did get that high, it probably felt that way.
For those hoping for a reprieve from the hot weather, there’s bad news: Summer hasn’t even officially started yet. The year’s hottest season finals kicks off Sunday and if weather forecasts are any indications, it looks like it’s going to start off with a bang.
The high temperature Sunday is expected to be around 97 degrees and the rest of the week follows suit with highs in the 90s.
These are the kinds of temperatures that thermometers love and those paying power bills love to hate. It’s vitally important for those who work outside to stay hydrated and to stay cool as much as possible. If you have to be out in the heat, the Center for Disease Control recommends cutting outdoor activities to morning or evening hours.
Family and friends are encouraged to regularly check in with the elderly and young children, who are at a greater risk for a heat related illness than others.
The CDC recommends those without air conditioning at their homes to go somewhere cool for a few hours, like a shopping mall or public library. The CDC says even a few hours out of the hot sun can help a body cool off.
The CDC also says on its website that electric fans will not prevent heat related illness. It says taking a cool shower or bath is a better way to cool off.
The hot weather doesn’t just affect us though. It also affects our animals, which should never be left in a vehicle, where the temperature can be much hotter than it is outside.
It’s going to be a long, very hot summer. It’s important to keep one’s health in mind while dealing with these hot days
