In the Christmas spirit, most people think about those in need around the holidays. It’s just human nature to think about others less fortunate when surrounded by family and friends in a warm and gift-filled home.
However, hunger is a real and ever present problem in a community plagued by a high poverty rate. Those who work at the Selma Area Food Bank know there’s a need 365 days a year.
In fact, the need is greater in the summer for some of our most vulnerable. Some children, who would be fed during the school day, are often at home with little or no food during the summer months.
The food bank is asking people for monterary and food donations to help them continue the important work they do.
The agency helps feed about 14,000 people a month in Dallas, Marengo, Perry and Wilcox counties. Money is especially needed because sometimes donated food isn’t the most healthy. For a $1 donation, the food bank can buy about 20 pounds of healthy food.
To donate to the shelter, call 872-4111 or stop by the Selma Area Food Bank. Hours for the food bank are Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also visit selmafoodbank.com for more information.
