Cystic fibrosis fundraiser Thursday

A fundraising event will be held to combat the complications of cystic fibrosis.

A cystic fibrosis fundraiser will be held at 811 Mabry St. at White Force Cottage. The event will begin at 8 a.m. and will last throughout the day. Proceeds from the event will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps to control and cure the disease. Event organizer Kaylee McWherter is organizing the event because the disease affects her family. Her 9-year-old son was born with the cystic fibrosis.

“I’d really like people to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation,” she said. “We’ve raised funds for the foundation because they do some wonderful medical research that has helped tremendously over the years.”

This is the third year for the event, which raised $5,000 last year. She said several fundraisers were held throughout the year, and a total of about $16,000 was collected.

Plenty of food will be available at the beginning of the event. Cookies, muffins, preserves and other homemade goods will be sold at 8 a.m. at the bake sale.

“We have loads of people who donate a bunch of cakes and things like that,” McWherter said. “They’ll be sold throughout the day.”

Chicken salad plates will also be sold for $9 at 11 a.m. The plates are complete with a chicken salad over lettuce, a selection of fruits, a dessert item and a bottle of water. The plates can be delivered for orders of three or more to businesses. McWherter said over 200 plates were delivered at last year’s event.

A silent auction will begin that evening at 5 p.m. Flat screen televisions, pottery, painting and signed gloves from Cincinnati Bengals player Michael Johnson are among the items that will be auctioned off. Participants have the option of purchasing a $5 ticket to be entered into a $100 prize drawing.

Free refreshments will be provided at the auction. Winning bidders will be able to pick up their items after the auction. To order chicken salad plates, call 412-8742 or 419-1056.
