Juwan Watters saw his dreams of playing college basketball come true Tuesday morning as he signed a letter of intent to play at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College in Andalusia.
Surrounded by friends and family, Watters signed the necessary paperwork in the Selma High School library.
“It’s a moment I’ve been waiting on my entire life and the reason I play basketball,” Watters said. “It’s a lifelong dream. It’s a happy moment just to finally sign and know I am going to go somewhere outside of Selma.”
Watters averaged 7.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game for the Saints as a senior this season.
“His talent is still in what I call that raw stage,” said Selma boys basketball coach Woodie Jackson. “That’s the only reason we recommended and he decided he go to [a junior college]. He feels like once he goes JUCO, he has two good years to develop and he’s got a chance of playing somewhere Division I.”
Jackson said Watters game will translate well to the next level and he sees bright things in his future.
“He’s extremely quick and he’s fast. There’s a difference between the two but he’s got a combination between the two,” Jackson said. ”He’s quick and he’s fast. When he learns to harness that and to use it at the right time, I think he will be a great player.”
