ORRVILLE — U.S. Congresswoman Terri Sewell hosted a town hall meeting in Orrville on Thursday evening.
The stop was part of Sewell’s “Congress in your Community” tour.
Orrville Mayor Louvenia Lumpkin said she wanted the Congresswoman back in the town since a visit to Keith High School last year.
“It’s such an honor to have a person of this magnitude to come down to this small town,” Lumpkin said.
Several topics were discussed, including terrorism, the Congressional budget and poverty.
Sewell said everyone, working as a community and nation, must break the cycle of poverty.
She said she focuses on job growth because she believes employment will help improve education, quality of living and communities.
“I can’t do everything, but I can use the power of this position to bring very powerful people here who can see the needs of this community,” she said. “So, when you apply for a grant, and I give them a letter of support for you, you are that much closer to actually getting that money.”
In addition, she answered questions on jobs, governmental aid and housing. She offered information on ways to contact her office and other leaders about any issues facing the community.
“The best service we could offer to you, especially in this day and age of dysfunctional government is to make sure we pass on the information on how to access grants, how to get better service from the federal government,” Sewell said. “We want to pass that information on to you.”
