Memorial stadium hosted the Special Olympics Wednesday, where more than 100 athletes showed off their skills in various events. There was shot put, ball kick, softball throw and several runs, as those taking part put on a show for the crowd and officials in attendance.
Athletes came from Selma, Uniontown, Camden, Marion and Chatom to take part in the games, which allow those with handicaps to display what they can do. Mayor George Evans ran the torch to get the event underway.
As part of the event, the Cahaba Center for Mental Health received more than $1,300 in donations during the games. Donations came from Woodsmen of the World, Alpha One Civitan and the Moose Club. The center helps those with mental health issues, as well as people battling developmental disabilities and substance abuse within Dallas, Perry and Wilcox Counties.
Winners from Wednesday’s competition moved on to the state Special Olympics in Troy, but that wasn’t the focus. The athletes who took part were just happy to be competing.
It was truly a special day for all involved. We thank all of those who took part in the event and everyone who made it possible.
