Local students planning for their future may be eager to learn they’ll have the resources to do just that at the upcoming 7th annual Gearing Up for College Workshop.
Selma City Council President Corey Bowie is hosting the event Thursday at the Carl C. Morgan Center. Scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and feature multiple colleges and a military branch, the program was designed to help high school seniors plan their life following graduation.
“With quality information, you can make a quality decision,” said Bowie, Wallace Community College Selma’s talent search recruiter and adult education advisor.
The National Guard, Auburn University at Montgomery, Concordia College Alabama, University of Alabama, University of Montevallo and more are expected to attend.
Each college will have a chance to inform students about its programs, admission requirements, housing applications and more. The National Guard will also tell the students what it has to offer.
Financial aid is one of the main topics to be discussed Friday, Bowie said.
Students are encouraged to attend the event with their parents.
“I am very well aware that a lot of schools may not go to college, but we also want to give them an avenue about what jobs are out there and how to get the award-winning resume,” Bowie said.
Two scholarships meant to fund college expenses will be awarded during the ceremony in a drawing.
One scholarship will be given in honor of now-deceased Dr. Geraldine Allen, a former instructor at WCCS and the University of Alabama at Birmingham who was known for her impact in the Dallas County area. The other will be given in memory of Alexis Hunter, a beloved Selma teen who was murdered in late December 2013.
Both scholarships will range from $500 to $1,000 in worth.
Bowie said that students must bring a copy of their transcript to the seminar to ensure that all drawing participants are eligible for the scholarships.
