A Selma man out on bond on attempted murder charges was killed Wednesday night, according to authorities.
Kirby Dante Brown, 23, was shot three times at about 7:30 p.m. as he was walking out of his girlfriend’s home in the 700 block of Mwenye Street. Six to eight people were inside the house at the time, but no one else was injured, according to Sgt. Mike Granthum with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities have not identified a suspect or suspects as of Friday morning.
“We’re following some leads,” Granthum said. “Some people have called and gave us some information. We’ve started interviewing people, and that’s where we’re at.”
On Nov. 2, Brown allegedly shot a 27-year-old Selma male in the head in the 900 block of King Street, according to the Selma Police Department.
That victim was transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center in a private vehicle and later airlifted to a Birmingham hospital for treatment.
Lt. Curtis Muhannad, with the Selma Police Department, said the November shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute between that victim and Brown. On Dec. 26, Brown made a $500,000 bond and was released from the Dallas County Jail.
Due to rumors on social media about Southside High School, the sheriff’s department alerted the school’s principal and Dallas County Superintendent of Education Don Willingham about the situation. As a precautionary measure, the department stationed deputies at the school Friday morning.
Granthum said attendance was down at Southside on Friday.
“Everything we are doing now is precautionary measures because there are juveniles [who are] related to some of the people that are deceased or related to some of the people that have been shot,” Granthum said. “We’re still trying to connect the puzzle. We’re not sure everything is connected, but it’s possible that some stuff that happened in November could relate to this and that, so we’re working with the city on that.”
