Two Selma teens are behind bars after allegedly robbing a juvenile at gunpoint Saturday, according to Selma Police.
Phillip Dwayne Thompson, 18, was charged with first-degree robbery. His alleged accomplice Derrick Wade Nichols, 16, is also facing first-degree robbery and gained an additional charge of second-degree escape after slipping out of the Selma City Jail following his arrest.
Both were arrested Wednesday and were in the Dallas County Jail without bond as of Thursday night.
The alleged robbery was reported Jan. 10 at 7:15 p.m. in the area of Philpot Avenue and St. Phillip Street. When officers arrived at the scene, they spoke with the 15-year-old victim, according to Sgt. Evelyn Ghant with the Selma Police Department.
“He advised that he and his friend were followed from the store and [he] was robbed at gunpoint by the suspects and another unknown black male,” Ghant said. “The victim advised that the suspects took his backpack containing his tennis shoes [and] cell phone, and then he was hit in the head by a gun before suspects left the scene.”
Nichols was taken to the Selma City Jail to be processed near the office area when he escaped, Ghant said.
“I guess when the cage close, it evidently didn’t closed tightly,” Ghant said. “He pushed the door, and that’s when he ran downstairs to the first floor.”
Nichols was taken into custody and escorted back to the city jail before he could go any further, according to Ghant.
Police have yet to identify the other suspect involved in the incident, which is still under investigation.
