The Selma-Dallas County Public Library is kicking off 2015 with an “All About You” series.

From Jan. 12 to 15, the library is hosting four free events focused on health screenings, weight loss, natural beauty products and natural, healthy hair. Because so many are focused on staying or getting fit as a new year’s resolution, Selma-Dallas County Public Library director Becky Nichols thought the series would be a great way to help them stay focused on their new commitment.

“The library programs and series are all about ways to improve our quality of life and be the healthiest people we can be and develop the best habits that lead to productive living,” Nichols said. “I think January is when in all of our minds are on the new year, New Year’s resolutions and new ways to do things.”

On Jan. 12 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Vaughan Community Health is conducting health screenings at the library. They’ll be checking blood pressure, weight and more.

“It gives people a sense of where to start,” Nichols said.

On the following day, Vaughan Community Health Services’ Karen Morris will be teaching the public about the best diet tips to lose weight.

On Jan. 14, Laura Spencer with Spencer Farms will be teaching participants about natural skin care at 2 p.m. at the library.

The series will wrap up Jan. 15 at 4 p.m. with a class about maintaining natural, healthy hair.

Nichols said the library always generates a series that will help local residents complete their New Year’s resolutions, and it bases it off of what the public has expressed interest in.

“We kind of brainstormed different things people have asked about, topics people have checked out books about or downloaded from our eBooks,” she said. “We try to take our cues, as always, from the public.”

The January series have been successful in the past and even attracted new library members, Nichols said.

“It’s a great way to meet and greet new customers and new patrons as well as others that come and enjoy the fellowship,” she said. “That’s a big part of library gathering, bringing people closer together that possibly don’t ever see each other.”

All four classes are limited and held in the Selma-Dallas County Public Library’s Vaughan Room. The library recommends anyone interested in attending to pre-register by calling (334) 874-1725 or visiting www.selmalibrary.org.
