Thanks to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., five Selma families can rest assured knowing they have the essentials for a holiday dinner.
The local chapter invited five random families to their fraternity house Wednesday to collect juice, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, bread, pecan pie and more. The group gives food, which is funded through donations from the public, to others yearly for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
“It’s part of our mandate to provide community service and to give back to the community,” member Collins Pettway said.
Normally, the group visits each home to deliver prepared food, but they changed things up this year. Nevertheless, they were pleased to see the families go home with some holiday goods.
After a few words to the families, Pettway allowed the residents to collect and bag some items from the tables full of food.
Denise Johnson, who hasn’t previously benefited from the food giveaway, said she was grateful for the donation.
“It means a lot, because sometimes things are tough and food has gone up,” Johnson said. “This is really a great blessing.”
