Recycling program needed in Selma

As Selma continues to finalize a plan to take over the city’s recycling program, we encourage Mayor George Evans and city council members to keep a few things in mind.
First off, the city should seek to make a profit from it. Anytime the city has to use its finances and effort into running a program, they should be focused on how it could financially benefit our area but also make sure it’s not taking resources away from other needs.
Second, the city should explore the possibility of hiring a contractor, an expert in the recycling and how to make it profitable.
It may not be the answer, but it should be researched.
In the end, we’re pleased that the city is making an effort to keep this recycling program alive. Like director of planning and development James Benderson said, we know the community loves the program too much for it to be abandoned.
