Let your voice be heard

The year 2014 is winding down, leaving us with less than three weeks to reminisce about the year that was and the events that truly moved us.
Although Selma is a relatively small town, there’s a lot of big events here and plenty of things to be proud of. The Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce announced this week that it is having Selma citizens vote for the attraction and event of the year on its Facebook page.
This is a great way for community members to remember all of the events they attended this year, and let their voice be heard.
We can debate which events are our best all day long, but a vote is the surest and most efficient way to actually name one the best.
Among those up for the vote are the Alabama Chili Cookoff, Integrity Worldwide 5K, Low Country Boil, the Bridge Crossing Jubilee and the Selma Christmas Parade.
Looking back on the list, it’s amazing to think that all of these events — there are around 40 on the list — took place in Selma this year. It’s truly a list of nominees we should all be proud of and brag to visitors from other cities about.
The attractions list is just as impressive, which again reinforces that there are dozens of monuments and buildings to see in our historic city.
We encourage everyone to log onto the tourism Facebook page and vote.
Not only does voting help the tourism department understand what attractions and events the people in our city enjoy, but it also should help them market the events more effectively.
Nothing is more valuable to a city than the opinion of those that live in the city.
