Howard Lothian Smallwood

Howard Lothian Smallwood, age 73, of Selma, passed away, Wednesday November 26, 2014.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Rev. and Mrs. Howard Smallwood; sister; Marilyn Venable; and: son-in-law Tim Myers.
Mr. Smallwood is survived by his wife of 53 years: Carol Smallwood; son: Lamar Smallwood (Staci) of Waycross, GA; daughters: Linda K. Myers of Dothan, AL, LaDonne Aronsen of San Francisco, CA; sister: Alice Ann Cooper (John) of Gardendale, AL; brother in law: Wayne Venable of Athens, AL; grandchildren: Lindsey, Lauren and Landon Smallwood of Waycross, GA; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Smallwood served at Wallace Community College for 25 years (1972 – 1995) as Athletic director. He as inducted into the Alabama Coaches Hall of Fame in 2014. While dedicated to promoting baseball to the youth of Selma and Dallas County, he built a legacy founded on his love and passion for baseball and the teaching aspects that prepare young people for the challenges of adulthood through the life lessons learned from the sport.
Smallwood attended Clark Community College where he graduated in 1961 then graduated from Florence State; now the University of North Alabama) in 1967. He received his Masters of Education from the University of Alabama.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Elkdale Baptist Church with Rev. Cory Horton officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing. Visitation will begin at 10:00 at the church. Burial will follow at Mt. Tabor Cemetery in Hartselle, AL at 3:30 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Ricky McDowell, John Roseberry, Ferrell Ford, Arlon Thacker, Mel Bradshaw, and Tim Gibbs.
