Don’t let would be Scrooges ruin Christmas

The Christmas shopping season will officially kick off next Friday as stores right here at home and across the country gear up for the biggest shopping day of the year.
But believe it or not, not everyone shares in the holiday spirit. Christmas sees a peak in theft and other property crimes that can easily ruin the most wonderful time of the year.
A little vigilance can go a long way to protecting yourself from would be Scrooges.
Locally, Lee Green, owner and instructor at Karate World, is offering his annual women’s self-defense class tonight. Kudos to Green for sharing his expertise with the community.
But there are other tips to keep in mind. The National Crime Prevention Center advises the following:
•Do not buy more than you can carry.
•Wait until being asked to take out your credit card or checkbook.
•Deter pickpockets. Carry your purse close to your body or your wallet inside a coat or front pants pocket.
•Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. Check the back seat and around the car before getting in.
•Do not leave packages visible in your car windows. Lock them in the trunk.
