An accident claimed the life of a Plantersville woman Wednesday evening.
According to Alabama State Troopers, Verloish Woods, 50, was killed when the 2004 Kia she was driving left the road and overturned. The accident happened six miles north of Selma on Dallas County Road 39, shortly after 6 p.m.
Two passengers in the car suffered serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals.
According to Troopers, who are continuing to investigate the accident, seat belts were not in use; part of troubling statistic in 2014.
As of late August, Troopers had investigated 323 traffic fatalities in 2014. Of those, seat belts were available to 262 of those killed, but only 86 of those fatalities were wearing seat belts.
In a report published by the Centers for Disease Control, seat belts reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by about 50 percent.
