The 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday is still a few months away, but some visible signs of the city getting ready for the huge event will begin Monday.

Crews with the Alabama Department of Transportation will converge on downtown Selma Monday to begin restriping parking spots, crosswalks and dividing lines on Broad Street, starting at Dallas Avenue and continuing over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, past Selma Curb Market.

According to Selma Mayor George Evans, the work is expected to disrupt downtown traffic for two weeks.

“This will not involve them blocking off streets, but traffic will be impacted off an on for up to two weeks,” Evans said. “This is just one part of the state’s partnership in helping us get ready for 50th anniversary.”

Evans said officials with the city spent Friday working to notify downtown Selma businesses who will be affected by the work.

“We found out about this work Thursday and want to get the word out as quickly as possible to those businesses that might be impacted,” Evans said. “This is something that needs to be done and hopefully it can be done quickly.”

During recent public meetings, Evans has often mentioned the commitment by Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley and other state leaders to support the city of Selma’s efforts in getting ready for the anniversary that is expected to draw worldwide attention and huge crowds.
