The Selma-Dallas County YMCA will host Ronald Steele’s basketball camp Tuesday, June 24 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The camp is for boys age 9-14 and the cost for each player is $15.

“This is an area that a lot of pros don’t come to and [Ronald’s] makeup is to help areas like this and to lift people up so he is really looking forward to coming and having a great camp here,” John Deamer, development director of Black Belt Community Foundation, said.

Steele, who was named Alabama’s Mr. Basketball in 2003, which is awarded to the top high school basketball player in the state, and starred collegiately during his career at the University of Alabama, is currently playing for PMS Torino, a European team based in Turin, Italy.

“Ronald has been looking to do some things in the Black Belt region for a couple of years and right now he is playing in the European League over in Italy and returns to Birmingham in the summer,” Deamer said.

Drinks and snacks will be for sale during the camp, but campers are responsible to bringing their own lunch.

Demear said Steele will talk a lot about basketball, but he will hit on other topics, such as healthy eating habits, as well.

“He will show techniques with dribbling and also defensive skill, but mostly he is about putting a plan together for your life that involves basketball but does not put basketball as the centerpiece,” Deamer said.

Players can register by going online to organichoopz.com/Selma, or at the Selma-Dallas County YMCA.
