Members of the U.S. Marshals Service captured Lavonte Cardell Conn Monday, one month after authorities believe he was involved in a shooting on the 2100 block of Forrest Street in late April.
Selma police investigator Lt. Curtis Muhannad said Conn, who is facing two counts of attempted murder and one count of first-degree robbery for an April 30 altercation, was arrested in Milkwaukee, Wis., Monday and should be returned to Selma in the coming weeks.
“He’ll have to go through an extradition hearing in Milwaukee County, and once his extradition is approved, we will send traveling officers up there to retrieve him,” Muhannad said.
In a release, inspector Henry Geberth of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, said members of the Marshal’s Service were able to locate Conn on Monday at a Milwaukee residence.
Geberth said task force members saw Conn outside of the residence and were able to take him into custody without incident.
He is currently being held at the Milwaukee County Jail.
In a news release on May 1, Muhannad said Conn approached two men sitting together in a vehicle parked on Forrest Street and told them to hand over everything they had.
Muhannad said a struggle ensued, during which Conn shot the victim in the back and stole a bag, containing what authorities believe to be marijuana.
The man sitting in the driver’s seat exited the vehicle and pursued Conn on foot. While chasing Conn, the victim was shot three times before managing to take the stolen item and wrestle the Taurus .38 Special handgun away from Conn.
The gun was out of ammunition when the victim took it from Conn.
Muhannad said Conn’s arrest was welcomed news to both the victims in the April 30 incident, but also to the law enforcement officers who had been searching for him since then.
“It means we can start bringing closure to the case for the victims,” Muhannad said. “And we can start working to figure out the reason this offense occurred.”
