It’s time to get to work

After multiple months of campaigning, Dallas County has spoken and chosen its representatives.
Congratulations to the winners, but we shouldn’t dwell on the elections longer than needed.
The reality is that candidates will soon take their place among other Dallas County officials and start work. The time for political posturing and mud-slinging is over. Now, it’s time to fulfill your campaign promises and serve the voters of Dallas County.
Being elected to a county position shouldn’t grant some type of power over average citizens. Being elected means you now have a duty to listen to residents.
“Public official” is frequently used to describe mayors and heads of county commissions. In reality, the positions should function as public servants, carrying out the wishes of Dallas County residents.
So, good job candidates. You won, but don’t forget who you work for — the residents of Dallas County.
Several months remain until candidates take office. While preparing to take office, successful and unsuccessful candidates should focus on removing campaign signs that clutter roadways.
The city of Selma has an ordinance against signs on public property, which includes roadsides and medians. A quick drive around Dallas County will reveal that dozens of signs sit on public property.
The signs will take time to remove. We understand that they won’t disappear overnight, but with elections over, they will quickly become clutter rather than political advertisements.
Candidates and their workers should remove the signs instead of forcing code enforcement or police officers to take time away from their primary responsibilities.
