Voters head to the polls Tuesday

After months of campaigning, the day to vote in the statewide party primaries has arrived.
Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m., giving voters the opportunity to cast a ballot in a number of key races, most of which are found on the Democratic ballot. The race for Dallas County Sheriff, Alabama Senate’s 23rd District and Alabama’s 7th Congressional District, tax collector and tax assessor will all be found on the Democratic ballot and the winners Tuesday will take office as none of them will face Republican competition in November.
“It’s many, many places and countries where you can’t vote where people would physically give their lives to be able to vote,” Dallas County Probate Judge Kim Ballard said. “It’s a right that we all should take advantage of.”
Any individual interested in learning where they should vote may call the Dallas County Board of Registrars at 874-2534. Those not able to reach the Board of Registrars may contact Ballard’s office at 874-2513 for that information.
Poll workers will direct anyone who arrives at the incorrect polling place to their proper location, Ballard said.
According to the new Alabama Voters ID law, eligible voters must present a valid picture identification to vote. A driver’s license, a passport, military ID or any form of governmental ID will be accepted.
“For some reason they just don’t have it and they know two people that work for the county at the polling places and they can vouch for them that they are who they say they are, that’s the only alternative we got to the picture ID,” Ballard said.
When voters walk in, they will sign in and choose either a Democratic ballot or a Republican ballet. Ballard said local candidates would only appear on the Democratic ballet.
An average of about four to five poll workers will be present at each of the 32 stations, including the absentee and provisional box. The poll workers will be able to help guide any confused voters through the process.
