Monday afternoon, Mayor George Evans held a meeting discussing the city’s plans for Memorial Day.
The city will hold a Moment of Remembrance program honoring fallen war heroes on the steps of City Hall steps Monday, May 26 beginning promptly at 2:30.
The event will include remarks from Evans; Mayor Louvenia Lumpkin, Orrville; Mayor Wayne Labbe, Valley Grande; and Probate Judge Kim Ballard. After the remarks from the speakers, members of the American Legion and the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars as well as different veterans will read off names of fallen soldiers from Dallas County.
Kay Alsobrook, the planner of the event, said that the city hoped the event would be brief, but also serve as a teaching moment for participants.
“We just want to make the community more aware of what Memorial Day is really about,” Alsobrook said. “We have gotten to where we think it’s just about sales, it’s about barbecuing, it’s about family or it’s about being at the beach and the lake. It is all those things, but it’s all those things just because what these people that we are honoring did, giving their life, to help us preserve our safety.”
