The Dart: Sisters get a work out at the stadium

Since she started working out again in early April, Lakendra Austin isn’t taking any off days.
The Dart landed near Selma’s Bloch Park Wednesday and found Lakendra and her sister Karri jogging around the outdoor track and running the stairs at Memorial Stadium.
Lakendra, 26, said she is motivated to get into shape with beach season right around the corner, while also getting her daughter, Sania — who is 7-years-old — used to being out in the sun.
“I want to get my daughter out of the house,” Lakendra. “I don’t want her to sit at home most of the summer time so I’m trying to get her used to coming out to the park each day.”
Along with running regularly, Lakendra also started at Crossfit Selma Monday and after a couple of sessions she’s already in love with the workout program.
“Everybody encourages everybody,” Lakendra said. “It’s not, ‘I’m better than you, I’m better than you.’ We want to uplift each other. That’s the best part and the different workouts. It’s something different and new every day.”
Lakendra is definitely not taking it easy.
Every day that she isn’t working out at Crossfit Selma, she does a morning run at Bloch Park and an afternoon run. On her evening run, she brings Sania along so that the two of them can get their daily exercise in.
If that’s not already enough, she also does 100 jumping jacks for every lap she takes around the track at Bloch Park. She also usually spends some time running up and down the stadium steps at Memorial Stadium.
Doing two workout routines would wear most people out.
“It does [make me tired],” Lakendra said. “We only do Crossfit three times a week so on your off days you can do a mile or two to keep your heart rate going.”
Wednesday, Lakendra talked her sister, 22-year-old Karri, into joining her to do laps around the track. Karri, who just finished a semester of school at Wallace Community College Selma, said she hopes to spend a lot more time exercising this summer.
“Now that school is out, I want to spend some more outside exercising,” Karri said. “I have more time for working out now.”
If Lakendra has her way, she will be working out with her sister a lot this summer. Lakendra wants Karri to join Crossfit, something the younger sister is strongly considering.
“She keeps trying to talk me into joining,” Karri said. “I think I will.”
