Track meet will bring thousands to Selma

Starting Friday, Selma’s total population will take an approximate 4,000 person jump as the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Class 1A-3A track meet comes to town.
The size and scope of the meet rivals Selma’s largest event — the Bridge Crossing Jubilee — and surpasses the Battle of Selma’s most recent attendance numbers.
With the added population comes an increase in the amount of cars on the road.
Thankfully, the Dallas Åvenue Bridge opened ahead of schedule, increasing the number of ways to access Memorial Stadium, but traffic will certainly slow a bit with so many traveling back and forth from hotel rooms to the stadium and restaurants.
As Selma and Dallas County residents travel around town, we would ask for patience.
The increased traffic will add to commute times, but should boost business in the area.
We’d also ask Selma residents to put his or her best foot forward and be welcoming to visitors.
The track meet is a prime opportunity for athletes and parents to get a first look at Selma. And, with so many important historic anniversaries approaching in 2015, a positive experience during the track meet could lure them back for a second visit.
