The annual Butterflies and Bridges Run is just around the corner, and about 90 people have already signed up to participate.
The seventh annual run is set for April 19 at Selma High School with registration beginning at 6:30 a.m. Created to serve as a fundraiser for the Selma City Schools athletic programs, the event includes an 8K and 2-mile course.
“We’ve had a good turnout from our students, as well as a lot people from out of town registered,” Selma City Schools athletics director Patrick Evans said. “We still have a lot more room for people who want to sign up for it.”
Runners will start in front of Selma High School on Broad Street before heading south toward the historic downtown Selma.
“It gives them an opportunity just continue to make history, because history is being made every time we run in a race like this,” Evans said.
Individuals 13 and younger who register before race day must pay $7, while the cost is $15 for older individuals pre-registering. Anyone 13 and younger registering the race must pay $10 to participate, while older individuals must pay $20 to register on race day.
Approximately 80 percent of the proceeds go towards sports activities for all Selma City Schools.
Evans said Thursday the run has raised $4,000, and the group has a goal of $10,000.
“We are just really excited about it this year,” Evans said.
